Trauma and PTSD Therapy

What is Trauma?

Trauma is a deeply distressing experience that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, leaving a lasting impact on their mental, emotional, and even physical well-being. Traumatic events can range from sudden, life-threatening incidents to prolonged exposure to harmful environments. Trauma can result from:

  • Accidents or injuries
  • Abuse (emotional, physical, or sexual)
  • Witnessing violence
  • Natural disasters
  • Military combat
  • Sudden loss or grief

No two people process trauma in the same way, but when trauma goes unresolved, it can manifest in various ways, affecting day-to-day life, relationships, and emotional well-being. For many, trauma can lead to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

What is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. PTSD doesn't just relate to the memory of the event but also to the brain and body’s response to it. Common symptoms of PTSD include:

  • Intrusive thoughts: Flashbacks or nightmares about the event.
  • Avoidance behaviours: Avoiding people, places, or activities that trigger memories of the trauma.
  • Hyperarousal: Feeling constantly on edge, easily startled, or having difficulty sleeping and concentrating.
  • Negative mood changes: Persistent feelings of guilt, shame, anger, or detachment.

PTSD can affect every aspect of life, making it challenging to function at work, maintain relationships, or even feel safe in everyday situations. However, with the right support, recovery is possible.

How Trauma-Informed CBT Can Help:

Trauma-informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based approach specifically designed to help individuals process and heal from trauma. Unlike standard forms of CBT, trauma-informed CBT takes into account the complex impact trauma has on a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, providing a sensitive and safe way to navigate the healing process.

Why Choose Trauma-Informed Therapy?

Trauma affects everyone differently, and your experience is unique. Trauma-informed CBT respects that individuality by tailoring treatment to your needs, ensuring you feel seen, heard, and supported throughout the process. Our approach is not about forcing change—it’s about working with you at your own pace, addressing the deep emotional wounds trauma leaves behind, and helping you move toward healing in a way that feels right for you.
